Uruma Takezawa”Boundaries”
2026.4.23(Thu)-2026.6.21(Sun)
This exhibition brings together approximately 50 photographs by Uruma Takezawa, spanning from his early body of work Walkabout to his latest series, Boundary.
Captured across South America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, these images center on the idea of “the land.” Here, the land is not only vast natural scenery, but also the people who live within it.
From the depths of dense, overgrown jungles to settlements beyond sandstorms—across mountains and seas—the photographs trace encounters with people along the way. Living far from our everyday realities, they honor their traditions and cultures, dwelling in close embrace with the natural world.
In these places, human beings exist as part of the land itself. When our gaze meets theirs, the familiar division between “nature” and “humanity” quietly dissolves.
This photography exhibition presents, through the motif of the land, an essential beauty born from the relationship between nature and humankind, while inviting viewers into a world that lies beyond all boundaries of nation, race, religion, and ideology.
Uruma Takezawa
Born in 1977, Uruma Takezawa is a photographer whose work centers on “the land.” Traveling across the globe, he captures not only vast landscapes but also the people who exist as part of them.
Between 2010 and 2012, he undertook an extensive journey spanning 1,021 days and 103 countries, which resulted in the photo book Walkabout (Shogakukan) and the travelogue The Songlines (Shogakukan). His 2015 exhibition Land, held in Manhattan, was widely featured in local media and received critical acclaim. Following Boundary | 境界, a series capturing the landscapes of Iceland, he is set to present the latest installment, Boundary | 中心, in December 2025. He is the Grand Prize winner of the 3rd National Geographic Photography Award and currently serves as a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts. The name “Uruma” comes from an Okinawan word meaning “island of coral,” reflecting his formative encounter with the sea of Okinawa, which inspired him to begin photography.
