Katsushika Hokusai “HOKUSAI IN BLOOM”

2025.4.17(Thu) – 2025.6.8(Sun)

In spring, nature comes to life. In the fields and towns, colorful flowers bloom in profusion.

Flowers, which have long symbolized “beauty,” “ideals,” and at times “transience” or “awe,” have been a medium for many artists’ expressions and reflections. How did these flowers appear through the eyes of Hokusai?

HOKUSAI IN BLOOM is an exhibition featuring 65 works by the Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, centered around the theme of flowers, as suggested by the word ‘BLOOM,’ with pieces from his Hokusai Manga and additional special displays creating the exhibition space.

This is the first exhibition of Hokusai Katsushika’s work at “art cruise gallery” in almost a year, and we hope that visitors to “PLAY w/ HOKUSAI,” which featured 80 works, will rediscover the appeal of Katsushika Hokusai in a new light, with all works on view for the first time at our gallery.

We hope you will enjoy Hokusai’s humorous depictions of the myriad of phenomena surrounding flowers, the city of Edo, and the exuberance of its people, all depicted with his precise touch.

Katsushika Hokusai

Born in 1760 in Honjo Warigesui (present-day Kamezawa, Sumida Ward), Hokusai left behind a diverse body of work over
his approximately 70-year career. His output is said to total around 30,000 pieces, including hand-painted works,
woodblock prints, nishiki-e, and shunga (erotic prints). In addition, he collaborated with craftsmen to create items such as
folding fans, hand fans, and festival floats, engaging widely in cultural activities and contributing to creations rooted in
the daily life of Edo
