“Paris is a theater where the price of admission is time wasted.”
— Robert Doisneau
With a rare perceptiveness that earned him the nickname “the fisherman of images,” Robert Doisneau captured the small dramas of everyday life, creating a distinctive world often described as the “Doisneau Theater.” A nationally beloved French photographer, he left an indelible mark on the history of photography. Infused with an innate spirit of nonconformity and a gentle sense of humor, his works continue to be cherished by people across generations and borders.
This exhibition is presented with the full cooperation of Atelier Robert Doisneau, founded by the artist’s family. It features approximately 40 carefully selected modern prints from the atelier’s collection, including his iconic photographs set in Paris, works depicting the Paris suburbs where his photographic journey began, portraits of artists who defined their era, and images of children—subjects that recur throughout his career.
What ultimately inscribed Robert Doisneau’s name into the history of photography was his profound love for humanity, grounded in an unwavering belief in human goodness, together with the patience and gaze born of boundless curiosity, and an unceasing spirit of experimentation with the medium of photography. His life and work vividly reflect the 20th century, often called “the century of photography.” Though he repeatedly insisted throughout his life that “I am not an artist,” the photographs of this great humanist continue to question the expressive possibilities of a single image, resonating with viewers today with a fresh and enduring brilliance.
Robert Doisneau
Born in 1912 in Gentilly, Val-de-Marne, on the outskirts of Paris, Robert Doisneau studied at the École Estienne in Paris, where he trained in the techniques of lithography, before becoming an assistant to the photographer André Vigneau. In 1934, he joined the Renault company as an industrial photographer. He began working as a freelance photographer in 1939. Gaining widespread recognition for his photographs capturing everyday life among ordinary people, primarily in Paris, his work continues to be loved around the world today.
In 1951, he was selected as one of the exhibiting photographers for Five French Photographers at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1992, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art Oxford. Robert Doisneau passed away in 1994 at the age of 82. His many awards include the Niépce Prize (1956) and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie (1983).
